There are many types of lead-acid batteries used in photovoltaic energy storage systems. At present, there are three kinds of lead-acid batteries, valve-regulated lead-acid sealed batteries and lead-carbon batteries that are used more.

Flooded lead-acid battery

The sulfuric acid in the electrolyte of the flooded lead-acid battery directly participates in the charging and discharging reaction process of the battery. In traditional lead-acid batteries, the remaining space in the battery tank except solid assemblies such as polar plates and separators is filled with sulfuric acid electrolyte, that is, deep cycle rich liquid wet lead-acid batteries, in which the electrolyte is in excess, so it is called battery A "flooded" battery in which the plates are completely submerged in a sulfuric acid electrolyte. Flooded lead-acid batteries have a cover on top to allow ventilation and prevent splashing of liquid. During use, due to the loss of water evaporation and decomposition, it is necessary to periodically open the cover to add distilled water and adjust the density of the electrolyte, so it is customarily called an "open" battery. Flooded lead-acid batteries have the characteristics of high power conversion efficiency, long cycle life, high terminal voltage, strong safety, high cost performance, and simple installation and maintenance. They are currently the first choice for various energy storage chemical power sources, emergency system batteries and starting devices .

Valve-regulated lead-acid sealed battery (VRLA battery)

They are also known as maintenance-free batteries and can be divided into two types: AGM lead-acid batteries and gel-sealed lead-acid batteries. AGM batteries use pure sulfuric acid aqueous solution as the electrolyte, most of the electrolyte is in the glass fiber membrane, and a part of the electrolyte is adsorbed inside the plate. Compared with open-type batteries, AGM sealed lead-acid batteries have less electrolyte, thicker plates, and lower utilization of active materials, so the discharge capacity of the battery is about 10% lower than that of open-type batteries. AGM sealed lead batteries have a smaller discharge capacity than today's gel-sealed batteries. Gel-sealed lead-acid batteries (GEL-type batteries) and colloidal lead-acid batteries are improvements to ordinary liquid electrolyte lead-acid batteries. It replaces sulfuric acid electrolyte with gel electrolyte, which improves safety, storage capacity, discharge performance and service life compared with ordinary batteries. Its electrolyte is made of silica sol and sulfuric acid. The concentration of sulfuric acid solution is lower than that of water-absorbing glass felt battery, and the amount of electrolyte is more than that of water-absorbing glass felt battery, which is equivalent to flooded battery. This electrolyte exists in a gel state and is filled in the separator and between the positive and negative electrodes. The sulfuric acid electrolyte is surrounded by a gel and will not flow out of the battery.
