CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television, commonly known as video surveillance. "Closed circuit" means that the broadcast is usually transmitted to a limited (closed) number of monitors, unlike "regular" television, which broadcasts to the general public. CCTV networks are commonly used to detect and deter criminal activity, and to record traffic violations, but they have other uses as well.

To ensure the functionality of the entire CCTV system, the availability and performance of each component must be monitored 24/7. Many subsystems have their own monitoring capabilities, but using multiple monitoring solutions can take more effort in your day-to-day than one central solution. On top of that, the multitude of monitoring tools increases the risk of missing warnings. Ideally, there is a central monitoring solution that can include classic IT (storage, network, IT infrastructure) as well as camera and video systems and power.

Traditional CCTV systems include:

One or more cameras (analog or digital), each with a lens equipped with an image sensor

Video recorder – a standard video tape recorder for analog systems, or a direct video recorder (DVR) or network video recorder (NVR) for digital systems

Cable – RJ45 for digital or coax for analog

One or more monitors to which the image is transferred

A camera uses an image sensor to record an image through a lens.

These images (and often audio) are transmitted wirelessly or by cable to a tape recorder or tape. Loggers can use analytics software and other smart technologies to scan data and send automated alerts to humans or other systems and devices. This Video Management Software (VMS) records, stores and analyzes video feeds. The software is often self-learning, using machine learning (ML) algorithms to leverage features such as motion detection, face recognition, people counting, and more.

Monitors can be passive (by software) or active (by humans) monitoring. The CCTV network itself can and should be monitored.

Analog - transmits a continuous video signal using a Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) connector on a coaxial cable. They are relatively low resolution, but cheap and effective. There are more peripherals in an analog system, e.g. standard coaxial cable usually does not carry audio. Analog signals can be digitized, and more cost-effectively, even with older equipment. Images require a video capture card and can be stored on a PC or recorder. Taking it a step further, Analog HD increases the resolution of legacy systems (1080 pixels) and is backwards compatible with analog cameras and BNCs.

Digital - Digitizes the signal at the camera level. These systems don't require a video capture card, as the images are stored directly to the computer, but require a (relatively) large amount of space to store the recording, so they are usually heavily compressed.

Network or IP - Used with analog or digital cameras, these systems utilize a video server to stream footage over the Internet. The advantages are access to WiFi and audio, distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) for analyzing image footage, remote access, power over Ethernet (POE), and better resolution. Additionally, IP cameras have the ability to combine more cameras into one to cover wide angles that would normally require multiple cameras or camera systems.

All three options are still in use equally, with high usage of IP camera systems and digital cameras.
