Is VRLA battery Maintenance-free? - Compared to traditional vented/flooded/wet lead acid batteries, yes, but that doesn't mean you can ignore them. VRLA batteries don’t need watering, however, they should always be kept clean, using industrial cleaners and degreasers to keep connectors and terminals free from any corrosive elements. VRLA battery charging and functionality should be checked regularly to keep them healthy properly.

The Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) Battery is a type of rechargeable lead-acid battery. It is a fully maintenance-free and complete sealed battery. They are also commonly known as Sealed Battery (SLA). Injection of water or electrolyte are not required for VRLA type of battery. Nowadays the VRLA batteries are commonly used in various power backup systems and electrical appliances.

VRLA batteries are designed slightly differently than regular lead-acid batteries because there are no valves in these batteries to vent oxygen. It is designed in such a way that even if the positive plate is fully charged, the negative plate will not be fully charged. The negative plate does not produce hydrogen gas, while the overcharged positive plate will produce oxygen.

Step1: The O2 gas generated by the positive plate reacts with the charged spongy lead (Pb) of the negative plate to form lead monoxide (PbO).

Pb + ½ O2 → PbO

  Step 2: The generated lead monoxide reacts with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the electrolyte again to generate lead sulfate (PbSO4).

PbO + H2SO4 → PbSO4 + H2O

Step 3: The generated lead sulfate (PbSO4) is reformed again to generate sulfuric acid and lead (Pb).

PbSO4 + 2e- + 2H+ → H2SO4 + Pb

This process prevents moisture loss. In this way, the O2 generated by the overcharged positive plate is automatically absorbed by the negative plate, and there is no need to discharge O2. This battery does not require an initial charge.

However, VRLA batteries are called maintenance-free batteries, follow the maintenance procedures below to extend the life of the battery.

1. Cleaning and sealing of battery terminals.

2. Remove dust from the battery and clean the battery compartment to avoid rust.

3. Maintain the temperature of the battery compartment. It is very sensitive to temperature. Always maintain room temperature at 20-24 degrees Celsius as recommended by the manufacturer.

4. The charging and discharging schedule of the battery is also important to prolong the battery life during long-term storage.

5. Follow manufacturer-specific guidelines or manuals for maintenance.
