The maintenance of motorcycle battery

1) Daily maintenance of the battery

①Support the main bracket of the motorcycle to keep the battery level. Check whether the liquid level is between the upper and lower marking lines. If the liquid level is lower than the lower marking line, add distilled water.

Cleaning of battery lead connectors

Cleaning of battery lead connectors

② Frequently clean the dirt on the surface of the battery case to keep it clean, and check for electrolyte overflow.

③ Check whether the wire connectors are in good contact, and whether the wire connectors connected to the positive and negative terminals are corroded. If the wire connector is corroded or rusted, remove it and clean it with a brush, as shown in Figure 3-67. When disassembling, start from the negative pole first, and be careful not to let the negative pole touch the car body.

④ When cleaning and reinstalling, the positive pole should be connected first, and then the negative pole, so as to prevent short circuit. Because the positive terminal is easily corroded (hydrogen gas is easily evaporated during operation), a layer of grease should be applied to prevent corrosion.

⑤ Check whether the small air hole on the liquid filling cap is unblocked, if it is blocked, unscrew it and smash it with a thin steel wire.

⑥ Check whether the battery is installed firmly, if it is loose, fasten it.

⑦ Regularly check the density of the electrolyte, adjust the density when the season changes, and charge it in time when the discharge exceeds the specified level.

⑧Observe the lower part of the battery, if there is sediment at the bottom, it means that the polar plate has fallen off, and it is close to the service life, and you should prepare to replace the new battery.

⑨When the battery is found to be working abnormally, it is necessary to find out the cause in time and eliminate the fault.

Precautions when maintaining the battery:

①Explosive gas will be generated when the battery is used and charged, so it is strictly forbidden to approach open flames or high temperatures. Should also avoid positive and negative short circuit and positive and negative terminals loose.

② The electrolyte contains strong acid, so prevent it from splashing on the skin, eyes and clothes. Once in contact, immediately wash with plenty of water. If it enters the mouth by mistake, drink plenty of water or milk immediately and send to the hospital for treatment.

③ The installation of additional accessories such as anti-theft devices will have a certain impact on the battery. It is recommended to use the anti-theft alarm recommended by the manufacturer. Using other anti-theft alarms may cause abnormal operation of the circuit system and even damage the battery, igniter, voltage regulator rectifier and other related electrical components.

(2) Inspection of battery liquid level

Check whether the liquid level in each single battery is between the lower limit line (LOWER) and the upper limit line (UPPER) marked on the battery case or is 10-15mm higher than the pole plate. Liquid port cock, fill distilled water to the position of the upper liquid level indicator line.

(3) Inspection of battery electrolyte density

Use a densitometer to measure the density of the electrolyte in each single battery, which should be 1.26 to 1.29 (liquid temperature 20°C). More than 1.29 add distilled water, less than 1.26 add charge.

(4) Adjustment of battery electrolyte density

① Fully charge the battery, suck out an appropriate amount of electrolyte, and measure the density of the electrolyte.

② If you need to adjust from high to low, add distilled water, and from low to high, you should add an electrolyte with a relative density of 1.40.

③ Charge with a small current for 1-2 hours to mix the electrolyte evenly. Fast charging should be avoided as it shortens the life of the battery. When fast charging is necessary, the charging current should not exceed 2A.

④Measure the density of the electrolyte, if it still does not meet the requirements, it should be adjusted again, sometimes repeated several times until it is suitable.

(5) Supplementary charging of the battery

The motorcycle charging system adopts a constant voltage charging method, and most of the small ordinary chargers used in maintenance stations also use a constant voltage charging method.

The characteristic of the constant voltage charging method is that the charging voltage remains constant throughout the charging process of the battery. When the battery starts charging, because the battery voltage is lower than the charging voltage and the charging current is relatively large, it can be recharged quickly. Generally, the capacity of the battery can be greatly increased in a short period of time. As the battery voltage continues to rise, the charging current gradually decreases until the battery voltage is close to the charging voltage, the charging current becomes very small, and the charging work is close to stop.

For a battery with severe power loss, the charging voltage is much higher than the battery voltage, and the charging current formed during charging will be particularly large.

Take the 125 type motorcycle charging system of a certain brand as an example. Under normal circumstances, when the engine is idling, the charging current is about 1A. When the engine speed is increased, the charging current can reach a maximum of about 5A. The standard charging current of the battery is usually 1/10 of the rated capacity of the battery, that is, the charging current of a 12V/7AH battery is 0.7A. Even if the battery is charged quickly, the charging current should not exceed 3A. The charging current when the battery is seriously depleted It will greatly exceed the charging current of fast charging, which is harmful to the battery, and it is also very easy to damage the voltage regulator rectifier.

The biggest harm of excessive battery charging current is that it is easy to cause the active material on the plate to fall off, which has a great impact on the service life of the battery. Therefore, it is best to use a charger with adjustable charging current to supplement the battery. The charging current is 1/10 of the rated capacity of the battery. When there is no charger with adjustable charging current, bulbs can be connected in series in the charging circuit to reduce the charging current.

When you have to use the motorcycle charging system to charge the battery, it should be noted that after the engine is started, it must not run at high speed to avoid excessive charging current. For motorcycles that need to run urgently, the charging current can also be reduced by connecting bulbs in series in the charging circuit. The method is: disconnect the battery fuse, connect a 12V, 21W light bulb in series, wait for the motorcycle to run for a while, the capacity of the battery increases, and then remove the light bulb. It is troublesome to charge the storage battery like this, but it is beneficial to the use of the storage battery and can prolong the service life of the storage battery.
