What You Need to Know About Motorcycle Batteries

Motorcycle Batteries

The battery of the motorcycle is fully charged, but it runs out of power just after a few uses; or the fully charged battery runs out of power after a few days, because the plates of the battery are severely vulcanized.

When the polar plate of the battery is severely vulcanized, a layer of thicker white lead sulfate crystals will be formed on the plate, so that the active substances involved in the chemical change of the battery will be reduced. At the same time, this layer of crystals will hinder the infiltration of the electrolyte and reduce the capacity of the battery. This kind of situation is commonly referred to as the vulcanization of the plate. The main reason for the vulcanization of the battery is that the battery has not been charged enough for a long time, or the battery has been placed for too long in a half-discharged state.

If serious vulcanization of the battery plate is found, you can discharge the battery first, pour out the electrolyte, then inject an electrolyte with a lower density of about 1.15, and charge it with a current that is one-fifteenth of the battery capacity until bubbles appear in the electrolyte, then reduce the charging current. After repeated several times, the battery will generally return to normal.

In case of severe sulfidation, distilled water can be added, and the same method can be used for charging, so that the lead sulfide will dissolve into the distilled water under the action of the electric field to form a very thin electrolyte.

When you are using a motorcycle battery, the following points are what you need to know, so as to better help you protect your battery and prolong its service life.

1. Heat: Overheating is one of the worst enemies of battery life. Battery temperatures above 130 degrees Fahrenheit will greatly reduce battery life. Stored at 95 degrees, the discharge rate of the battery is twice that of 75 degrees (as the temperature rises, the discharge rate will continue to increase). Excessive ambient temperature is one of the most common causes of battery damage.

2. Vibration: It is the second most common battery killer after overheating. A rattling battery is unhealthy, take the time to check your mounting hardware and make your battery last longer. Having rubber supports and bumpers in the battery compartment won't hurt battery usage and longevity.

3. Sulfation: This occurs due to continuous discharge or low electrolyte level. Excessive discharge will turn the lead plate into lead sulfate crystals, which will then melt into sulfate. This problem usually does not occur if the battery is properly charged and the electrolyte level remains the same.

4. Freezing: This won't bother you unless the battery is low on charge. When a discharge occurs, the electrolyte acid turns into water, which freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which can crack the casing and bend the plates. If it freezes, tap the battery; on the other hand, a fully charged battery can be stored in subfreezing temperatures with little fear of damage.

5. Prolonged inactivity or storage: Prolonged inactivity is the most common cause of a dead battery. If the battery has been installed on the motorcycle, it is best to start the vehicle every other week or two during the parking period, and start the vehicle for 5-10 minutes to charge the battery; it is recommended to unplug the negative pole of the battery for long-term parking to avoid running out of power in the vehicle battery. If it is a brand new battery, it is recommended to store the battery for more than 6 months before selling it after charging to avoid power loss.
