A home security system is a group of physical electronic components that work together to protect a home. If you want to see a real system, typically a home security system will consist of the following objects:

Security Cameras: Smart security cameras connect to Wi-Fi, allowing us to remotely live-stream footage from our systems and receive notifications when our cameras detect motion, people, or packages. Many cameras included infrared or color night vision, cloud or local storage, and two-way audio, which allowed us to talk to anyone on the camera.

Motion Sensors: Motion sensors should be placed in main entryways or hallways on the ground floor of the home so that they can detect motion and alert us when our system is armed. Some motion sensors are pet sensitive so they wouldn't turn off every time our dog walked by.

Entry Sensor: Also known as a contact sensor, an entry sensor has two parts: one on the window or door and one on the frame. These sensors use magnets to determine when one of these inlets is open or closed. If the sensor thinks the entry point is open, it will alert us. We recommend placing entry sensors on ground floor windows or doors. Most are battery operated, and many even have adhesive backings for easy installation.

Glass Break Sensors: Sometimes, instead of opening windows the old-fashioned way, intruders will simply open them to avoid triggering the entry sensors. However, the glass breaking sensor also detects the sound of glass breaking and alerts us via mobile notifications.

Siren: Sirens are present in home security systems, either by themselves or as part of other equipment. Usually sounded at the same time as other alarms, designed to scare off intruders or alert our neighbors.

Keypad: To arm or disarm, security systems usually require a code, which we enter on a keypad mounted on a wall or placed on a flat surface.

Key fobs: We have keys for our cars, why not have keys for our security systems too? Key fobs allow us to disarm or arm our security systems without using the keypad. They are perfect for when we are upstairs and don't want to leave the bed!

Panic Button: If something goes wrong, the panic button is an easy and quick way to alert emergency services, whether it's the police, hospital, or fire department. Like the key fob, the panic button isn't mounted anywhere in particular, but we always have one on hand in case we need it. We recommend everyone keep at least one on their nightstand.

Base Station: The base station syncs all connected devices with our mobile application so that we can receive those notifications we mentioned earlier. Think of it as a central station, the passageway through which trains (i.e. IoT security devices) pass.

Yard Signs and/or Window Stickers: Many security systems also offer yard signs or window stickers to let us advertise that we have a security system. Usually, if a burglar sees a security system, they will turn around, so it's good to have these signs.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: We recommend that every home have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. With this simple tool, we can be alerted if the air in our home becomes unsafe.
